I just received this book yesterday, the marketing is deceptive. They make it out to be a new translation but it is actually a revision of the Revised Standard Version (which it’s self is a revision of the American Standard Version, the Revised Version, and the King James Version). I wanted something that was a true, fresh translation that wasn’t tainted by others. This isn’t it. They should be more TRUTHFUL about it and state rightly that it’s a revision of a revision of a revision.

The ESV Study Bible

Scandalous Sanity has received copies of the long awaited ESV Study Bible. We approached the newly formed ark of the covenant with consecrated hands, and revealed it’s contents to the world.

We discovered that the presence of God has been reboxed, BUT can now speak directly to you(just as he does John Piper, Tony Evans, Mark Driscoll and Joshua Harris) without the need to buy the aforementioned guys books or of mumbling pastors.

Each copy comes with glare reducing cream for the brightness with which you will be gleaming, sunglasses for your family to be able to look at you after you delve into it(Moses looked like a firefly compared to the way you’ll be glowing), and earplugs to tone down the volume of God’s voice.

Those who purchase the hardback and tru-tone leather copies will become known among their people(We have already ascended the hiearchy of our communities). But those who purchase the suffering baby calfskin manuscript will sit at the right hand of God (after Jesus, John Piper, J.I. Packer, Mark Driscoll, and Joshua Harris, but before the rest of the generations of people. It’s guaranteed on the side of the box).

We do warn you, the ESV is the closest to God you will ever get, even after you die(probably). Being in close proximity is dangerous. We recommend you proceed with caution.

We give this Study Bible 2 stars for it’s maps and detailed portraits of the temples and cities(Those things are awesome! It’s like a world class architectural firm came up with them). Another star for the outstanding and sensational promotion of the Bible. A quarter star for the endorsement by the biggest and most theologically correct speakers/preachers of the day. A quarter star for the triangle on the front of the Bible. A quarter for the recently found truths that no one has unearthed before, and we’ve been missing all this time. And a final quarter star for the smooth feel of suffering baby calfskin.

In all seriousness this Bible is pretty sweet. The introductions to each book are a bit more detailed than the new NLT study bible, and the study notes are ridiculous in number and content.

The only real problem we had with it was the article on “christian” ethics(The amount of articles in this thing are ridiculous as well). It seemed like a bunch of middle class white guys promoting their political views, and putting them in a Bible for the rest of us to believe as absolute theological truths because they have a Ph.D next to their name. (I think Kierkegaard would call them a bunch of “scheming swindlers” seeing as how the rest of that quote would apply to them. . . that crazy existentialist)

That took away a half star from our review of the Bible, the other half was taken away because of Tullian Tchividjian’s unruly excitement in the promotional video (take it easy brother).

So, we hope you enjoy your new ESV study Bible as much as we have. There is nothing more convenient than having a group of people who believe the same thing you do, think the same way you think, and speak the same way you do come together and make a Bible that speaks the same voice of God that you listen to (Seriously).

My primary concern is to call attention to a number of seriously erroneous teachings that mar this effort and could lead to the acceptation of false doctrines that could be fatal to sincere souls in search of truth.

The ESV Study Bible

There is a lot to like about the ESV Study Bible. It brings a wealth of mostly sound and up-to-date evangelical scholarship together, often with a distinct conservative and Reformed flavor. Needless to say, this Bible is rather bulky and the font of the study notes is quite small; such is the price of combining a mass of information in one volume.

There is one thing I don’t like about this Bible, and it is costing it a star. All the contributors who have written articles or study notes are male. With 95 such contributors, this has to be deliberate. The promotion material states: “The contributors come from 9 countries, representing nearly 20 denominations and more than 50 seminaries, colleges, and universities” - but only one gender. I have only found two women listed among those who have worked on this study Bible (assuming I have correctly assessed gender in all cases), and they deserve to be mentioned by name: Sherah Grose, “Assistant to the Project Director” (and therefore not a threat to male supremacy, I suppose) and Monica Gee, “Bible Production Coordinator”, whatever that means.

The study notes to controversial passages like 1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2 indicate this Bible takes a clear anti-Egalitarian position. On numerous debatable issues such as a late or early date for the exodus, the meaning of the millennium in Revelation 20, and the overall approach to the book of Revelation, this Bible presents an overview of the main evangelical positions. This is what I expect of a good commentary or study Bible; it should do justice to the spectrum of evangelical opinion. It is very unfortunate that the ESV Study Bible does not do this when it comes to the issue of women in the church.

There can be no doubt: this is a male study Bible.

The ESV Study Bible

This Bible was not what I thought. So far I had purchased both the “Spirit of the Reformation” and the “Reformation Study Bible”. The former was far better except for the NIV translation. The notes were superb and the scholarship shined through. So I thought this would be better and give me what I needed. Here is what I didn’t like because reviews of what others did like can tell you what is good about it:

1. It is huge - Don’t plan on lugging this thing around a lot.

2. The notes are very partial and often vague. I found myself looking in the notes and very often not seeing what the SOTR Bible had to offer. If you are not reformed and are just wanting “basic” notes on the text then you may be pleased.

3. I also found some dating issues a problem. The date they chose for Revelation is the late date. Not everyone agrees with this and they pretty much just blew the “early date” view off without any real reason why they chose the one they did.

4. The sections in the back seem like a waste of space. There is a lot of reading to do back there. Topics are covered from Bible Study to Salvation and it is very shallow and not what I thought was a good way to end the book.

5. It is definitely not preteristic (if that is your view).

6. It hides its contributors. What I mean is a buyer ought to be able to look at the authors and expect to find their personality and beliefs in the writings. Not with this Bible. It is very general and you almost see no expression between books and writers.

In summary, this is just an okay Bible and not near what it was made out to be. If you are going to get a study Bible try the SOTB (for Reformed believers), The Apologetics Study Bible (for apologetics) or the Archaeological Study Bible (for notes, maps and charts). Each of these far exceed the ESV Study Bible in their area of interest.
