Michael Shermer Decodes the Bible Code

The Bible Code claims that hidden in the first five books of the Bible in its original Hebrew text are hidden messages in code that made predictions thousands of years ago about current events, such as the assassination of JFK and the end of the world. In this episode Michael Shermer decodes the Bible Code and reveals it to be a form of numerology that serves as a supreme example of pattern-seeking (and finding) behavior of which we are so skilled.

Hi Albert

I don’t quote Einstein for credibility, I referred to a system for evaluating prophecies which is generally accepted as a good and impartial one which was created by Einstein.

I wasn’t talking about “7 days time”. If Muhammad makes a prediction that in the year 2010 the Muslims will fight the Jews, it isn’t a prophecy if his followers have been training for years in preparation for the battle and that triggers the event because the Jews fear they are going to be attacked.

Sorry. I didn’t realise you were being so basic. We all know it’s possible to self fulfil prophesies. If I say ‘I predict I will have pie for tea in 7 days time’ it’s in my own power to cook that pie so of course it’s not a prophesy. However, this is not the same as we’re dealing with here. I think you’re on a different thought process to me. I don’t believe in 2012 but if it occurs I will eat my hat as it would be a ‘prophesy’! Quoting geniuses does mean you’re above criticism.

“probabilistic” – sure, something like random chance.

Nice work with the moby dick example…

They bible also says that there is no such thing as gods (if you take the first letters on a few hundred different pages) :P

well i just sat thru this whole video , and it says that the science is bad at the end and there is nothing to talk about. I already figured that. ((ANY BOOK WILL GIVE YOU A CODE))

This crap was debunked on a BBC programme a few years ago. Yawn…

your mom predicted WWII

“still class as a prediction”

You are incorrect. If the people perpetrating the action to make the prediction come true are aware of the prediction, then it is no considered a prediction.

Einstein’s 5h guideline states:
If a religion has prophetic events that can be fulfilled by the followers of the prophet (especially after the prophet has died), then it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. By logic alone, such predictions are not prophetic verses.

So no, it’s not :-)

A Bible code finding should sit firmly in the realms of mathematics and be applied with the most stringent of rules. It should withstand the highest levels of scrutiny and there should be no probability of it being found elsewhere. Finding BC in Moby Dick is like finding human DNA in a house brick. The only way this could happen would be if DNA wasn’t the unique underlying ‘code’ of human life but was just an arbitrary in all ‘stuff’… but it isn’t. DNA is a one off miracle, this BC isn’t.

I would say that if someone had foreseen an event but that event was not avoided it would still class as a ‘prediction’. I agree that the evidence to suggest that these finds are actual ‘Bible Codes’ and not merely probable finds is weak at present… but fascinating all the same.

I think Lloyd Pye is doing some amazing research with the Starchild and has some good evidence to enforce his case. I think as Lloyd recognises with the Starchild ‘with extraordinary finds you require extra ordinary evidence’. The same applied to the Bible Codes. For me they are fascinating but not concrete evidence.

It also says we were genetically altered by aliens and given the language gene. That’s in the BCII by Drosnin. That correlates with Lloyd Pye’s Intervention Theory.

there is a code in the bible where god states that the moby dick codes are done by his opposition,
and inferior to his codes. See for yourself. I’m not tiring to be famous.

It’s more of a retro-fit than a prediction. When has it predicted a large event which has as a result been avoided?

Tsunamis, terrorist attacks, high profile murders….anything?

The ‘code’ has only just been uncovered so it seems obvious people will want to find evidence now rather than later, so they look to past events to try and prove the code. Otherwise it is like doing a word search in a paper without knowing the words to search for or when the answers will be printed. There’s evidence to suggest that it has been used to predict future events; Rabin’s murder, Bush winning supreme court case against Al Gore, Obama winning the election before ever being a candidate.

too true even in his book he points the finger at aliens writing the torah as they are the only beings that would be able to encode it in the first place

its all crapolla

they didn’t know the name prior to the event they found out who killed him and then discovered the name in the matrix.

even so this type of code can be done with other books not just the bible,

it sounds credible in the first book where he bangs on about the unchanging ltters of the torah but in book two he uses other books in the bible basically contradicting the first so its all crap, the fact that hebrew characters represent numbers and letters means you could make it say anything.

Michael Shermer is the second leading athiest of this age behind Dawkins. Editer of skepdic magazine.

What does Michael Shermer have anything to do with this?

“I am looking forward to the day when someone finds text saying….”

That wouldn’t be difficult. Cryptographic studies show that you can get any message you like if you look for it the right way, which is to say decode it with the right key.

For any arbitrary text there is key which will extract it from the bible. It is mathematically proven.

the itzac rabein, dont know how to spell it, he was actually warned about his assassination prior to it happening, his response was that if God wills it, so be it and he ignored it and died by the hands of the man they said would kill him

know god

“I’ll keep you in my prayers nonetheless.”
Thank you. I’ll do the magic dance of the Flying Spaghetti Monsters for you.

What do these predictions never tell us what is going to happen BEFORE it happens so that we can do something about it? Oh, because it’s rubbish!

I am looking forward to the day when someone finds text saying “The bible is man made” or “Do you think we’ll get away with this?”

We’re done sir. Good luck to you and yours :) I’ll keep you in my prayers nonetheless.
